What: South West Extreme Energy Gathering

Why:

  • In the South West, Helius Energy are seekng to raise investment this Spring (by the end of March). to take forward their plans to build a 100 MW biomass power station in Avonmouth. It will require around 1 million green tonnes of wood a year, imported from regions at-threat around the world. Download more information here.
  • Hinkley C Nuclear Power Station near Bridgwater continues to threaten future generations & forms a part of Government plans to build 50 more nuclear power stations despite devastating pollution in Japan.
  • Meanwhile, 650 square km of Somerset is threatened by fracking & coal bed methane extraction at the same time South Wales is carved up for exploration, including Underground Coal Gasification, while open-cast mines remain open.

The afternoon will look briefly at what is extreme energy, before sharing campaign updates from groups across the South West, followed by the remainder of the event, which will be focused on action planning.
