Underground Coal Gasification banned in Queensland
Latest news from Australia.
Following on from a devastating environmental incident involving energy firm, Linc Energy, the government of Queensland has moved to ban Underground Coal Gasification throughout the state.
The ban is immediate, with legislation likely to follow later in the year. The affected area is centred on the company’s operation near Chinchilla on the Darling Downs.
The firm is already on trial for breach of environmental regulations and could be liable for up to $56 million dollars, except for the fact that it has already been placed into administration. An ABC report gives further detail on this rapidly changing situation
