Frack Free February at Sustainable Frome
On Thursday 7th February at our monthly Sustainable Frome meeting at the Masonic Hall, around 50 people came together to watch Josh Fox’s short follow-up film to ‘Gasland’, entitled ‘The Sky is Pink’, which looks at the gas and oil industry’s response to his first documentary film, and further exposes the industry’s propaganda and its own internal reports about the problems with the hydaulic fracturing process.
We then updated people about the situation with fracking in the UK, and particularly in Somerset. After this we moved into a ‘World Cafe’ style forum, where people were invited to explore areas in which they could support the Frack Free Somerset coalition. One focus for a good deal of conversation was the government’s ‘Growth and Infrastructure Bill’, which could railroad through planning applications for drilling despite local opposition. Other people talked about developing more creative responses to help raise public awareness of the dangers of this technology, including Artists Against Fracking.
We ended by showing the inspirational film ‘CSG Free Communities Australia’, which shows the power of citizens acting together to safeguard the quality of their water and to protect the environment, and hope that here in Frome we can really up the ante against this destructive industry in Somerset and in the UK as a whole.
